The Best Loved Soft Toy

26/03/2011

In Room 2 our topic for term one is ‘All About Me!’. In this topic study we have been learning about many things and one of the main areas we have been focusing on in the last few weeks is valuing ourselves as individuals and acknowledging that we all bring special things with us to the classroom.

The ‘Best Loved Soft Toy’ idea came about after we read Diana Noonan’s ‘Best Loved Bear’ story and the kids in Room 2 asked whether we could have our own competition. We got a notice typed up and sent it home, invited some guest judges along and, as a class, came up with our own marking criteria. We decided the soft toys would be judged on how original their name was, its ‘huggability’ (how many hugs it had had), how well it had been cared for and how well it was dressed.

When the day of the competition finally came (Wednesday, 23 March 2011), Room 2 was absolutely buzzing. We set the toys up around the classroom and they were all clearly numbered for when the judges came in. We also got visits from Room 10 and Room 4 throughout the day and Mrs Poole even brought in her bear (which is 39 years old!) to share with us.

At the end of a fun filled day of sharing a special part of ourselves with our class the prize giving took place. All toys were given a medal for taking part but the overall winners for each category are as follows:

Overall winner – Alysha Brownie

Best cared for – Danielle Norton and Josh Taylor

Best dressed – Joel Brien and Yuri Sidorov

Most hugged – Taylor Brooker and Jasmine Clout

Most original name – Neve Te One (Cheesella) and Lucy Shackleton (Delilah)

Here are some pictures of Room 2 with the toys they love so much.

Joel’s alligator, Crackling, was wearing some of Joel’s undies from when he was three

Yuri made a passport for Fluffy who was dressed in a Canada outfit.

Mrs Poole sharing her very special teddy with Room 2 and Room 4.

Josh sharing his lion, JD, with the class.

Our overall winner was Alysha because she has had Dolly since she was born. We could just tell Dolly had been so well loved by the crack in her head and her worn out clothes. Well done Alysha.

After a hard day of competing some toys decided to camp out in Room 2 overnight. Princess even came prepared with her very own sleeping bag!

Red & Black Day at Tawhai.

09/03/2011

To whom it may concern,

On Tuesday 1st March, 2011, students from Tawhai School in Stokes Valley, Lower Hutt held a coin trail to raise funds for the people of Christchurch. Two senior students designed large cardboard pictures of the Cursaders emblem and then the students placed their coins on the edges of the pictures. The whole school contributed $687 on Tuesday. We all dressed in the  Canterbury colours of red and black and decorated the playground with red and black balloons and streamers to make the school come alive for this special fund-raiser. The students all assembled together to take a look at how much money $687 looked like- most of it in coins. The crusader emblems were very heavy when they were covered in coins. Then on Friday 4th March, our PTSG held a sausages sizzle and a further $320 was raised. So with a total of over $1000 raised from our school community, we all felt very proud to be able to offer such a great donation to the people of Christchurch.

Yours sincerely,

MacKensie  O (on behalf of the students at Tawhai School)

The Life Education Mobile Classroom visits Tawhai School

08/03/2011

Last week Tawhai School had a visit from Jo and Sarah with the Life Education Mobile Classroom. Many of the children were already familiar with Harold and Tam.But for those children who have not been at school for very long, it was an opportunity to experience the sophisticated sight and sound techniques used to teach the children about health and physical education, based on the 3 philosophical messages that life education believe are essential to childrens developement.

  • That they are unique and special.
  • That their bodies are magnificent.
  • That we need to support and respect each other.

All classes visited the classroom twice and will be given a workbook to take home.

click on the link below to see  some photos of Ms Randell’s class enjoying their time  in the classroom.
