Graham Braddock Artworkshops Visits Tawhai School

31/05/2011

On Monday 30th May, Jane Lloyd, an artist from the Graham Braddock Workshop, came to Tawhai School to show the children, from all 3 syndicates, with a step by step approach, how to draw cartoon faces. All the children enjoyed sketching a variety of  cartoon faces displaying different expressions. Using this interactive and enriching experience, the older children went back to the classroom to create their own comic strips.

Tawhai School Cross Country

24/05/2011

Monday 23rd May was a slightly cold overcast day, perfect for Tawhai School’s annual cross country event. There was a splendid turn-out of parents, grandparents and friends to watch the children run their races. The juniors plus the year 3 students ran within the school grounds, but the 4-6 years ran a longer race and pounded the pavements around Tawhai, Maru and Hoereka Streets, before turning back into the school grounds via the Hoereka Street entrance. A very big thank you to all the parents who helped marshall the races.

Senior Syndicate Visit to Orongomai Marae, Upper Hutt.

16/05/2011

Our Students experienced a day of exciting interactions when they visited the Orongami Marae on Thursday 12th May. For many of the students it was their first ever visit to a marae so the welcome from the elders was the beginning of a wonderful day of singing, listening to stories, participating in action games and laughing with the elders about things they would enjoy experiencing.
Our students were fortunate that a team of french journalists happened to be visiting the Marae at the same time. The children thoroughly enjoyed performing their stick games for them and having their photographs taken as they sang. Maybe we will appear in a french magazine in a month or two?
The children were invited to hongi (press noses) as a form of greeting and then they headed off to enjoy morning tea.
After that we all sat and listened to stories about the carvings in the whare and what each one represented. The children were very interested in the many snippets of knowledge about the panels, posts and rafters that made up the whare and some drew beautiful patterns to remind them of what they had seen.
After lunch and some recreation on Maidstone Park, our day came to a tiring but happy end and we headed back to school on the bus.
So much was learnt today. What a great adventure for us all!

Thanks to Heather MacDonald, Rachel Tallon and Lydia Stewart for providing photos.
