Room 9 showed the rest of the students their lovely artwork.

Recently, Tawhai entered 2 teams for the inter Stokes Valley Soccer Tournament. One of the teams Tawhai White won the tournament beating one of the Koraunui teams. Both teams who took part were asked to stand to applause from the rest of the school. The trophy they won now sits proudly with the other sporting awards in the trophy cabinet in the Admin Office.

The students were shown some photos taken during the recent snowfall the week before. Containing some stunning scenic views, also children and adults alike having some good old fashioned  fun,  it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A copy of the photos will be put on the stuff to share drive. They can also be viewed on the link via the Winter Wonderland post.

Stokes Valley School’s Soccer Tournament.

26/08/2011

On  Friday the 5th August, 20 people from the senior syndicate went to Delaney Park for a soccer tournament. All the schools from Stokes Valley took part. The teams were divided into two groups and played in a round robin. Tawhai White was in the first group and Tawhai Blue was in the second one. Tawhai Blue won one game and drew the another game in their group. Tawhai White won one game and drew one as well. Tawhai Blue and Koraunui Red had the same number of points so there had to be a penalty shoot out and unfortunately Tawhai  lost. This meant that Tawhai Blue would play in the semi finals against Tawhai White. The score was 2-1 to Tawhai White so they went through to the grand final. In the other semi final, it was Koraunui Red against Koraunui Green and Koraunui Green won the game. The final was Tawhai White against Koranunui Green. The final score was 4-2 to Tawhai White. After that we had prize giving. The final placings were: Tui Glen 6th, Koraunui  Red 5th, Koraunui Yellow 4th, Tawhai Blue 3rd, Koraunui Green 2nd and Tawhai White 1st. We received the trophy and it is now proudly sitting on our trophy shelf in the office. Go Tawhai!!!!!!

On Tuesday the 9th August, Room 1 was told that we were going to get all the weeds out of the Tawhai School garden so that we could plant new things. First Mrs Adams chose four people to choose a buddy and asked them to do an internet search of what plants you can grow in winter time. My buddy was Erin. We only found that you can grow carrots, lettuce and potatoes, but other groups found different vegetables. after the computer search, we had to sketch a daffodil and it’s bulb and roots that Mrs Adams had brought from home, and label all the different parts of the flower. Then we brainstormed how we thought a plant grew and what it needs to grow. When it was time to do some real gardening, Mrs Adams told us what to do and how to use the gardening tools and then we got started. Lots of people found these maggoty things and squished them. But we managed to get rid of all the weeds in the garden. It was loads of fun and messy too. I can’t wait to do it again and start planting our vegetables.

The Lamb Visit.

18/08/2011

On Thursday the 11th August 2011, Bailee in Room one brought her pet lamb to school. His name is Chilly. Chilly is a two and a half week old lamb that was orphaned and is now being hand reared by Bailee and her mother.  Chilly is sooooo cute. He was quite an unusual looking lamb as he had black patches over his face and body. He didn’t look like any other sheep in the flock. When we first saw him, we thought he was a dog as he was harnessed with a leash.

At News time, we sat in a circle and Bailee shared news about her sheep. When Chilly first got in the circle he managed to run out and head towards the maths equipment where he munched out on some fake paper money, but he spat it back out.

I asked Bailee what the lamb drinks. She said that he drinks formula milk from a bottle. The lamb started walking around in the circle and we got to pat him. I patted him under his chin and then he wouldn’t leave me. When we patted him he felt like a feather, that’s how soft his wool was.We took some photos of the lamb with the class and then he had to go. It was fun having Chilly around.

Avalon Intermediate Trip

18/08/2011

Last Wednesday the Year 6′s went to Avalon Intermediate for our annual intermediate experience. Mrs Adams came with us and we went by bus. When we arrived we went into the hall and the principal, Mr Hastie put us into five groups.
Each group went to two different technology classes out of six. There was art, woodwork, multi-craft, cooking and fabric design.
The people who went to woodwork made a thaumatrope, which is a round wooden disc with an image on each side. When you spin the disc, the images join together, forming an optical illusion.
The people who went to art learned about shading and blending. They each sketched a word, such as their name, then they shaded the letters using pencil. They then coloured the background using different colours and blended them together.
The groups that went to fabric technology designed bookmarks and used the sewing machine to create different stitch patterns.
The multi-craft groups made mini desert Islands using various art and craft supplies. The cooking groups made delicious Afghan biscuits and got to lick the icing sugar bowls( with spoons of course!)
after the first round of technology classes we had morning tea. After morning tea we went to our second technology class then we headed for assembly with the Avalon Intermediate students. They have a Gold Card Reward system for students who have been doing well or who have been doing something good, and they are awarded a gold card. They have awesome prizes for students whose gold card has been pulled out of the draw. They had a draw for the visiting students while we were there and Maddison in my class won a basketball.
We then had lunch and some of us looked at the vegetable garden that the students are growing, as we are going to grow one ourselves back at school. During lunchtime, the teachers set up some sporting activities for the kids. We got to see the Tug-o-War interclass challenge that they do. That looked like heaps of fun.
After lunch we were divided into groups again. This time some groups went into the classes and worked alongside the intermediate kids, and another group went to the library to work on the Apple Macs that they have in their computer suite. I got to work on one of the computers and we made our own mini movies using one of the programmes that they have.
After that it was time to go back to School. I think everyone had a really good time.

17/08/2011

The polar blast has certainly gone down very well with the students at Tawhai. A lot of them would certainly have never seen snow before.

Here is a slideshow of photos taken during the snowfall on Tuesday at Tawahi.

The Junior School has adopted a phonics programme. The pupils in Ms Randell’s group are roboting word families so that they can hear, read and write down the correct phonings. We love doing the programme, especially the teachers.

Jump Jam for Fitness!

14/08/2011

All the students have been taking part in Jump Jam exercises most mornings. Watching the excellent DVD and ” jamming ‘ along to the sounds of staying alive, in the Navy and I’m a believer, they seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves! So much so that during the day, they can be heard humming along to some of these songs while they are working at their desks.

Here are Rooms 9, 10 & 11 dancing to “In the Navy”.

Rooms 9 & 14 have been spending some time in the afternoon reading to each other. Usually they do this in small groups, but on this particular day, Emily, Hendrix & Sam read their books out loud to both classes.
