Good Chances Afternoon at Tawhai.

30/09/2011

Wednesday 28th September, a beautiful sunny day,saw most of Tawhai School competing out on the school field. 20 teams of at least 11-12 children from all syndicates, representing the countries competing in the Rugby World Cup, took on 5 different obstacle courses. This resulted in a very entertaining afternoon. Each team was awarded points based on team work, and sportsmanship, but bonus points were awarded for all sorts of things such as good behaviour & initiative. There were even points awarded to the Scotland team by Ms Randell for just being Scottish! The winners of the competition were the USA. Ms Page organised the course beautifully and a great time was had by all students and teachers.

Camp Fundraising Disco a Roaring Success!

21/09/2011

About 200 students attended the Camp Fundraising Disco on Friday 16th September. What a wonderful turn out!  We were treated to some pretty niffty dancing by both the Junior and Senior Students. DJ Daryl Gatward played music very much to everyone’s taste and even managed  a couple of heavy metal  tunes for those of us who still like to headbang, thanks to Daryl for giving up his  time to be our DJ at these events. Thanks to all those who helped on the night:  Wendy, Nancy, Chrissie, Julie, Sam, Ryan, Nikita, Lydia and we even had some ex Tawhai Students on hand to lend a hand, Tian, Tesh and Alia. Not forgetting the teachers who joined in for a boogie with their students. Also a big thank you to Howard Anderson and Vicki Foss who have provided us with sounds and lighting for many a disco. At time of reporting, we don’t know the exact figure, but the disco will have probably raised about 900 dollars. A great effort!

Scripted and co-hosted by Hannah & Riley.

The Artsplash choir  sang beautifully for the students.

Some photos were shown up on the overhead projector of the students in their “Black Out Day” Clothes. What a fantastic effort in support of the Rugby World Cup!

Blair,  Bethany, Annelisa and Finn from Room 15 showed the assembly their plants and how well they were growing.

Alysha, Kayla, Jasmine, Joshua and Neve shared their wonderful poems about shadows.

Mrs Adams then announced the results of the ICAS writing competition. It was great to see how well Tawhai School did in this competition.

SPCA CUPCAKE DAY!

15/09/2011

On Sunday, August 28th, Alysha and I baked and decorated cupcakes for the SPCA Cupcake Day. It took us about four hours to decorate them all. The next day we took them to school to sell them at morning tea time. They were sold really, really fast and in the end we raised at least $140. We were really amazed that we sold them all. We hope we can do it the next time it’s on.

” BLACK OUT DAY” at Tawhai.

11/09/2011

To celebrate the opening of the Rugby World Cup on Friday, Tawhai School had a “Black Out” day on Friday the 10th September. The staff and most of the students came to school dressed in black, although a few decided to support other countries. At 10.15am, everyone had an enjoyable time parading on the forecourt, waving their flags and banners. Then, after a lusty rendition of the National Anthem, some of the students were invited to perform the Haka which they did with great gusto.

Mrs Wheeler rubs shoulders with All Black at Airport!

09/09/2011

With the Rugby World Cup almost upon us, one particular teacher from Tawhai will be showing more than a passing interest in how the All Blacks fare in this tournament. Our beloved Mrs Wheeler, on arriving at Brisbane Airport found herself completely surrounded by All Blacks who were getting off their bus outside the airport, among them Sam Whitelock. By no means a shy lady, Mrs Wheeler poked him in the back and introduced herself and asked him if he was related to Shirley_____ and Sam Whitelock completed the name by saying Dalziel. Intrigued, he asked how did she know the lady? It appears that Sam Whitelock’s Grandmother and Mrs Wheeler’s Aunty were Champion Canterbury Tennis doubles Partners!

Some extra football coaching for the girls.

09/09/2011

In the Football  world, it is Girl’s and Woman’s week from the the 5th through to the 11th September, so there are various activities being undertaken during this period to commenorate woman’s/girl’s role in this particular sport. There are festivals with girls only games, free skills specials, and referee courses,  as well as Football Development Officers and maybe Football Ferns visiting selected schools across the country.  . Tawahi School, thanks to Pat Quinn, who has been running the Football for Schools 8 week programme, was one of the lucky schools to be included. Paul Greig, Football Development Officer from Capital Football and Natalie Lawrence, who works in the Football Ferns National training Camp(and also plays for Wellington United) were both at Tawhai this Monday to work with some of the girls from Senior and middle school. They spent a little time going through some ball skills with the girls before they split them into 4 teams of 5, each team playing the others once. Each team could decide which country to represent. So we had Scotland , New Zealand, Tonga and Spain.Scotland won the mini tournament. Each girl went away with a poster, a glossy photo of the Football Ferns, and a brochure ecouraging the girls to play soccer this summer.
