Twilight Soccer Season Starts.

31/10/2011

The twilight Summer Soccer season started at Dyer Street School today on  a lovely sunny day. Tawhai has  entered 4 teams  into the competition, comprising mainly  of 2 middle & 2 senior teams. All teams despite some very valiant efforts lost their games to some very experienced teams, some of whom are either in soccer accademies or have been playing promo league football in the winter. A special mention should be made of some terrific goalkeeping skills from Rachel Tallon’s team, Hamish in the first half and Zac in the second half. They produced the most amazing saves time and time again.

Below are some highlights from 2 of the games played this afternoon……

Halloween Cupcakes.

31/10/2011

As a camp fundraiser, I made some halloween cupcakes. Some of the decorations had icing like eyeballs with gummy snakes like in a witches cauldron, others were meringue ghosts with chocolate chips for the eyes and mouths. There were black spiderwebs, skeleton monsters, pumpkins, witches and some cakes had candy on the top like the sort of things you get given when you go trick or treating. Almost everyone wanted one because they looked amazing! They tasted great too! A great buy for $1.50. They sold like hot cakes!!

The students were asked to stand to sing the National Anthem, and it was noted that some of the new entrants knew all the words.

Daniel(yr 6) & Kerenza (yr 5) both from Room 15 shared their well written explaination about the sun.

A selection of photos from the recent very enjoyable Junior Syndicate trip to Wellington Zoo were shown to the students.

Josh, Luke, Roman, Rebecca and Hollie from Room 5 read out some riddles that they made up and asked the audience to try and work out what the riddles were referring to, Liam from room 10 correctly identified that they were all about the sun.

Mr Skilton talked to the students about the Tawhai Trees values, Respect, responsibility and excellence. He asked the students to give examples of ways that respect can be shown.

Mr Skilton presented cerificates to the runners up in the miniball competition, Connor, AJ, Claudia, Sam, Tane, Annelisa, and Joshua.

During assembly, the teachers are always on the lookout for students who show impeccable behaviour and will write down 2 or 3 names on a piece of paper which go into a draw at the end of assembly.Joel and Nicholas were the lucky students to have their names drawn to receive a prize out of the box.

Farewell to Ron Wainwright.

10/10/2011

Friday 7th October was a sad day indeed! It was the day that Tawhai School had to say farewell to their retiring Principal, Ron Wainwright. At 11.15am, the students proudly assembled in the playground, in their “posh” clothes to celebrate the end of Mr Wainwright’s working life, twenty four of those years as principal at Tawhai School. Mr Wainwright sat on his throne with his daughter Becky next to him to watch some very entertaining and well rehearsed items.
The Junior Syndicate went on a “Principal Hunt!” While the Middle Syndicate sang a song about a subject very dear to Mr Wainwright’s heart, his love of pies!
Jasmine C gave Mr Wainwright his final report, and the Senior Syndicate enacted a play called “Big Game Animals.” The Artsplash choir sang Individuality, Kiwi Kids &; Ma te Mahi ka Ora. Wendy Bartlett, Chairperson of the P.T.S.G & Kim Clough both spoke warmly of Mr Wainwright’s support over the years, both for the P.T.S.G, and students and their families.Mr Wainwright was presented with some wonderful gifts, namely, a framed cartoon, an Oscar for being the “Most Entertaining Principal”, a book of memories from the Senior Syndicate and several bouquets of flowers. Mr Wainwright, in turn, presented the School with some gifts for the library

Junior Syndicate Visit Wellington Zoo.

10/10/2011

Wednesday 5th October was a drizzly day on and off but it ididn’t spoil the Junior Syndicate’s visit to our local zoo in Wellington. With fantastic support from Parents and grandparents which meant that no adult had more than 3 children to look after, the students had a wonderful time exploring this ever improving zoo. Incorporated into the day’s programme was a visit to the Zoo School where the students sat on cushions surrounded by all sorts of examples of interesting creatures(most of them stuffed!) A very large wall photo of a snarling tiger dominated the room. The children were especially impressed with the stuffed lion standing near the door. They were allowed to stroke a live hedgehog called Prickles and a rat!
The children had a very enjoyable time exploring the zoo, taking in feeding times at the various enclosures. The giraffes were an absolute joy to view as were the chimpanzees. Some of the children were even allowed to feed them. The student’s wonderful experience at the zoo was reflected in their marvellous writing acounts of their experience the very next day!
