Today saw the last round of touch games at Fraser Park for our 4 Tawhai Teams. All the teams did very well, there were 3 wins and a very hard fought draw for the Black Ferns. There was a prize giving for each league, but this time, the organizers have decided that there wouldn’t be any playoffs for placings. Instead each coach named the most improved player and the most valuable player for their team.

Dyer Street hosted their third week of twilight soccer on Monday. Since the Tawhai Small Whites have now moved to a different grade, all 4 teams are playing at the same time until the season is over this year.
The All Whites had a much closer game this week, playing the Muritai Tornadoes. At half time, they were only 1-0 down, with not only Keaton displaying some great goal keeping skills, but Hamish, Zac and Lydia managed some shots on goal, and Hannah and Heilee were strong in defence. The second half proved to be a little more difficult as Muritai stepped up their attack and with some excellent ball skills, scored 3 more goals. But in all, a much more spirited performance from the Small Whites.

The afternoon finished with relays for children in Years 4-6 followed by the very competitive Staff, Parent, Student Relay. We had a fantastic day and thank you to all the parents who came along to support their children. The Northern Zone Athletics will be held next Tuesday 15th November and those children selected will be notified by Thursday.

The twilight Summer Soccer season started at Dyer Street School today on a lovely sunny day. Tawhai has entered 4 teams into the competition, comprising mainly of 2 middle & 2 senior teams. All teams despite some very valiant efforts lost their games to some very experienced teams, some of whom are either in soccer accademies or have been playing promo league football in the winter. A special mention should be made of some terrific goalkeeping skills from Rachel Tallon’s team, Hamish in the first half and Zac in the second half. They produced the most amazing saves time and time again.

Below are some highlights from 2 of the games played this afternoon……

Wednesday 28th September, a beautiful sunny day,saw most of Tawhai School competing out on the school field. 20 teams of at least 11-12 children from all syndicates, representing the countries competing in the Rugby World Cup, took on 5 different obstacle courses. This resulted in a very entertaining afternoon. Each team was awarded points based on team work, and sportsmanship, but bonus points were awarded for all sorts of things such as good behaviour & initiative. There were even points awarded to the Scotland team by Ms Randell for just being Scottish! The winners of the competition were the USA. Ms Page organised the course beautifully and a great time was had by all students and teachers.

In the Football world, it is Girl’s and Woman’s week from the the 5th through to the 11th September, so there are various activities being undertaken during this period to commenorate woman’s/girl’s role in this particular sport. There are festivals with girls only games, free skills specials, and referee courses, as well as Football Development Officers and maybe Football Ferns visiting selected schools across the country. . Tawahi School, thanks to Pat Quinn, who has been running the Football for Schools 8 week programme, was one of the lucky schools to be included. Paul Greig, Football Development Officer from Capital Football and Natalie Lawrence, who works in the Football Ferns National training Camp(and also plays for Wellington United) were both at Tawhai this Monday to work with some of the girls from Senior and middle school. They spent a little time going through some ball skills with the girls before they split them into 4 teams of 5, each team playing the others once. Each team could decide which country to represent. So we had Scotland , New Zealand, Tonga and Spain.Scotland won the mini tournament. Each girl went away with a poster, a glossy photo of the Football Ferns, and a brochure ecouraging the girls to play soccer this summer.
