Tawhai School Enjoy Fine Weather for their Cross Country.

On Thursday 17 May, Tawhai School held their annual school cross country event. Despite the already muddy course getting a drenching the day before from the heavy rain, the weather was exceptionally fine, and in fact most of the children loved getting ‘dirty’. The year 1 & 2 classes ran once around the school boundaries, the year 3′s ran round the long course once, the year 4′s twice and the year 5 & 6 classes had to do 3 laps of the long course. There was some very competitive running noted, from the new entrant 5 year olds who hadn’t experienced this before, all the way through the senior school veterans. It was also very pleasing to see those students who found it very hard going, persevering to finish the course, even the children who were experiencing painful stitches or had fallen over. Thank you to all the helpers who assisted the teachers in marshalling the course, and the parents/grandparents/extended family who were on the sidelines cheering the children on and giving them lots of encouragement. A very big thank you to Janette Page for her hard work in organizing this event. Results will be published on the website soon. Students who came in the first 12 past the line from year 4-6 will be looked at in selection for the Northern Zone Cross Country at Fraser Park.

Disco Time at Tawhai!

Yes it was disco fever again at Tawhai on Friday much to everyone’s delight. The juniors boogied on at the first disco early evening and the seniors got into the groove later on at their disco with a bit of break dancing and headbanging thrown in. Fuelled by chippies, chocolates and fruit drinks and bedecked in glosticks, they danced away to their favourite tunes, expertly put together by DJ Daryl Gatward. There were the usual games of musical statues and the best boy and girl dancer. Many thanks to Lisa Newland who helped set up the hall earlier on but couldn’t attend, Tracey Phear, Vicky Foss and Angela Kershaw who manned the food table for the first disco, Jill Finnlayson and Janette who sorted out the door sales and Danette who patrolled the entrance. Tracey and Vicky then went on to help at the senior disco too. Also thanks to all the teachers who attended and showed the students some cool dance moves of their own. A special thank you to Daryl for being our resident DJ and to Howard Anderson for providing the sound and lighting as he has done so often over the last twenty years or so.

Disco fever at Tawhai!

Just a reminder about the Disco at Tawhai School tomorrow. The junior disco(years 1-3) will be from 5.30-7.00pm and the seniors ( years 4-6) will be from 7.30-9.00pm. Tickets (priced $2.00) can be purchased from the classroom teacher or door sales will be available. For those parents who aren’t sure how much money to send along with their children, below is a price list of things that are available at both discos.

Relay Fight for Life Fundraiser.

Hi Tawhai School and the community/families of Tawhai School. Just letting you know that this was the biggest fundraiser for HIBS and with your support they raised $56,000 for the cancer society! Thanks for getting behind Ryan Poole, Devon McMillan, Jack Kilty and Finn McMillan and of course the Tawhai School Staff. Well done and thanks for your support!

Royal New Zealand Ballet come to Stokes Valley!

The students from Tawhai School were very fortunate in being able to watch some very talented members of the Royal New Zealand Ballet perform for them in the School Hall kindly offered by Tui Glen School today. As part of their committment to bringing the performing arts to Schools around the country, The New Zealand Ballet visit a select few each year with a workshop that combines warm up routines and stretches through to dance sequences and a costumed performance of repertoire from current seasons. The children watched a couple of excerpts from Cinderella which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Room 14 Mother’s Day Poetry Cards.

The Senior Syndicate are looking at Poetry as part of their writing focus this term. As it was Mother’s Day last Sunday, each student wrote a simile poem describing attributes of their mothers. The poems were then inserted into the frame of the cards they also designed and put together. Take a look at the final products. What a fantastic effort by all Room 14 students. I’m sure there was a tear in a few mothers’ eyes!!

Saturday 12th May saw Tawhai School play the last of their grading games. The Tawhai Tornadoes won both their games and the Tawhai Hoopsters had a win and a loss in their games.

Football for Schools Programme gets underway at Tawhai.

The Football for Schools Programme for the Middle and Senior Syndicates began on Tuesday 8 May. Part of Football New Zealand’s Whole of Football plan, it incorporates fun football-based challenges as a a way of developing manipulative skills as well as agility, spatial awareness and team work. This will run every tuesday until the last week of term.

Senior Students Attend Kiwisport Festival at Fraser Park.

On Tuesday 1st May, 30 students from the Senior Syndicate at Tawhai School went to Fraser Park for Kiwisports Day. When we got there, we had to find seats on the grandstand and sit down. After 10 minutes, a man from Kiwi Sports introduced himself to us and told us what sports we were doing that day. Our first sport was basketball, with Coach Terry and we did some passing and dribbling skills. After that, we went to tennis with Mel & Joel. We played Strongest Link and Bonus Ball. Then we played turbo touch. We also played Follow the Leader for our warm up. Then we practiced passing, resetting and scoring a try. Next we had half an hour to eat lunch and then we got back into the sports again with Rugby League. We played a game where we had to play the ball. We split in half and had to race each other. When we finished that, we went to cricket and we played it non-stop using our bowling and throwing skills. It was fun for the 30 students that went from Tawhai School and all the children that came from other schools too. Thanks to Miss Page who picked the lucky students. We had a great day!
