We couldn’t have picked a better day than today for Room’s 14 & 15 Education Beach Trip to Worser Bay Life Saving Club! The weather turned out nice and fine which meant that the ākonga could get in the water today.

The day started off with our designated lifeguards, Anna, Roisin, Kit, & Mickey going through the Sun Safety acronym, S, S,S,W,S,S,  the role of a lifeguard, what equipment they used, and what a medical kit looked like!

After morning tea, the lifeguards talked about 10 surf safety rules, such as, always swim between the flags, stay with an adult, listen to the lifeguards and if in doubt stay out!

There was about half an hour devoted to some cool beach games, then the akonga went back to the club to learn about rips and what to do if they were caught in one!

After lunch it was time to get into the water! With the parents forming a semi-circle in the water, the tamariki had to firstly go around and high five each adult a couple of times, then go round again with a handful of sand to give to each parent which meant going under water to get it between each adult!

Those that were a bit apprehensive at first about getting into the water felt so much more comfortable because they realised that they were in the safe net of the adults and that by the end of their experience, there were quite a few happy faces!

The children had a bit of free time to either stay in the water or enjoy digging holes in the sand with their friends.

A BIG thank you to our wonderful parent helpers who came along today! We couldn’t do these trips without you!
