Tawhai School

Mihi Whakatau

July 1 2022

Kiā ora e te whanau
The sun shone brightly on everyone gathered under the whareruruhau (canopy) this glorious morning as we held our first Mihi Whakatau of the year. The Manuhiri (the new students & Miss Whitworth) were warmly and formerly welcomed to Tawhai Kura by a karanga from Tu Rangatira leaders, Memphis & Lianna with the support of Charmaine Koraunui Marae.
After speeches from Mr Whiteman on behalf of the Tangata Whenua (staff & students), Mr McGarry (on behalf of the Manuhiri) & Principal, Mrs Poole, the manuhiri touched elbows with the Tangata Whenua. When the Mihi Whakatau was concluded with the Tawhai Kura waiata, our families were then invited to the staffroom to enjoy, a kapu tea, kawhe and kai!
A BIG paki paki to Mr Whiteman for organising this very special occasion and a HUGE paki paki to Charmaine McClean-Whaanga and Rua Sparrow from the Koraunui Marae for not only coming along to the Mihi Whakatau but for all their wonderful support and advice.
