Student Leadership

At Tawhai School we believe in the leadership potential of each and every child.

Engaged Students = Active Learners

At Tawhai School we believe in the leadership potential of each and every child. We hold the philosophy that it is not just the elite who leads but that leadership is in all of us. Leadership is a life skill.

The student leadership opportunities we provide for our senior students aim to develop leadership skills that will enhance their personal development and build a sense of pride and self-worth.

Examples of leadership opportunities available to Year 5/6 Tawhai School students include:

  • Tu Rangatira
  • Peer mentors
  • Road patrol
  • Librarians
  • Sports leaders
  • Enviro leaders
  • Assembly announcers
  • Enviro schools
  • Tech experts

What is Peer Mediation?

At Tawhai School we want students to support each other in resolving disputes through peer mediation.  In the playground we practise peer mediation and peaceful conflict resolution.

Peer Mentors are students who have expressed an interest in leadership, helping others and making Tawhai School a fun place to be.   Peer Mentors patrol the school playground, in high visibility vests, at lunchtimes to mediate minor disputes between students.

Peer Mentors are actively supported by the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) team, Senior Lead Teachers and Duty Teachers.
